Gigawatt-scale Commitments for Offshore Wind Power
July 31, 2020 from 9:00 am — 10:00 am
Zoom Webinar with Bonnie Ram
Center for Research in Wind
University of Delaware, Newark, DE
Local coastal communities are concerned about climate change impacts, especially current sunny day flooding and sea level rise. However some of these communities and decision makers are skeptical and/or could be better informed about the potential mitigation strategies relating to clean energy deployments that could address reduction of GHGs and other pollutants in the region. This webinar will present science and policy-based information about gigawatt-scale commitments for offshore wind power over the next decade that is designed to facilitate meaningful discussions about the local siting challenges, uncertainties, and tradeoffs around these clean energy projects. Case studies in the Mid-Atlantic region of the US and the West Coast of Denmark will be presented.
Bonnie Ram is an Associate Director at the Center for Research in Wind Energy at the University of Delaware and also has her own consulting practice focusing on clean energy transitions and the associated environmental and social effects. Bonnie led and completed (this January) a strategic planning process for CEOE that resulted in an interdisciplinary climate science and policy hub. In 2014, she was invited to serve as a Guest Senior Researcher at the Danish Technical University – Wind Energy Department in Denmark for two years where her responsibility was to stimulate new thinking & build a new interdisciplinary division.
For 10 years, as VP at a national consulting firm, Bonnie was a program manager for DOE’s Office of Wind Energy Technologies and the National Wind Technology Center (@ NREL). She played a central role in preparing the first U.S. government offshore and land-based wind visions by leading the environmental and social aspects of these strategies, in collaboration with engineers, modelers, & physical scientists. Ram holds a B.A. in Geography and International Development and an M.A. in Environmental Policy and Science–both from Clark University in Worcester, MA.
