Ierapetritou, Ali Named Associate Directors for Research Initiatives

The Delaware Energy Institute (DEI) is pleased to welcome Marianthi Ierapetritou and Saleem Ali as Associate Directors for Research Initiatives, effective July 1, 2022. Ierapetritou and Ali will support the mission and initiatives of DEI through the strategic identification, development, and implementation of energy science programs and activities. Together with DEI Director, Dion Vlachos, a primary focus of the new leadership team will be the collaborative development of systems and data for energy initiatives across campus and the establishment of an externally funded center.

“I am very excited to work with Saleem and Dion in this role as the future energy landscape becomes increasingly complex with food, water, and energy nexus being at the center of sustainable development. With my systems engineering background, I hope to bring forward those interesting connections and help in decision-making considering the economic, environmental, and with the help of Saleem, social implications,” explained Ierapetritou.

Ali added, “The energy transition requires new materials, many of which are scarce and expensive. The nexus of social sciences and rare energy materials is something I am looking forward to build on campus.”

Ierapetritou, Gore Centennial Chair in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Ali, Blue and Gold Distinguished Professor of Energy and the Environment, have both contributed in significant and multiple ways to the renewable energy landscape throughout their distinguished careers. The addition of their expertise, vision, and efforts are certain to be integral to the impact and success of DEI’s future-forward initiatives.

These appointments were also highlighted in the July 8, 2022 edition of For the Record, a digital publication from the Office of Communications & Marketing recognizing the professional activities and honors of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.
